Recreation Assistant – Temporary Summer Position – Barrhead Campus

The Shepherd’s Care Foundation is a faith-based, not-for-profit organization focusing on person-centered care. Operating out of our  Barrhead Campus, we are currently looking for an individual who will assist with ongoing initiatives while generating new program ideas within the Recreation field.


The Recreation Assistant, Temporary Summer position, will utilize their skills to maximize resident participation and engagement in meaningful therapeutic activities. The ideal candidate will demonstrate empathy, understanding, and enthusiasm in providing quality care and service for all residents.

The primary focus of this position is to assist the Recreation team in the following areas:

  1. Implementing Programs
    • Leads and motivates Residents in individual or small group leisure pursuits
    • Provides safe and effective delivery of therapeutic interventions
    • Assists in special celebration planning and decorating throughout the facility
    • Prepares and plans for programs daily
    • New idea generation for single and small group Resident programs and activities
  1. Communication
    • Provides relevant and accurate information regarding Residents to Recreation Therapist
    • Finds creative and inventive ways to communicate with Residents
    • Communicates effectively with team members daily
    • Excellent interpersonal communication skills
  1. Administration
    • Contributes to development of program calendar and distributes monthly newsletter/calendar and birthday cards to Residents
    • Document and track Resident participation daily attendance records

Other duties as required


  • University/College student currently enrolled in a related field. (Therapeutic Recreation, Sports & Tourism, Rehabilitation etc.)
  • Previous training/ related certifications in physical activity for older adults is considered an asset.
  • Experience working with and leading volunteers.
  • Strong proficiency with MS Office.
  • Strong communication skills (both verbal and written)
  • Enthusiastic, motivated, and creative.
  • Ability to work as a team and independently.
  • Ability to perform physical aspect of working with long-term care Residents
  1. Pushing/ Pulling contents that weigh a maximum of 180lbs
  2. Stretching/ lifting on a regular basis throughout the shifts
  3. Carries and transports objects of various sizes, to a maximum of 25lbs
  4. Crouching/ kneeling for short periods of time

This is a temporary full-time summer position beginning June 29, 2020 to August 28, 2020, with the possibility to continue part-time until February 2021. This position is funded based on the Canadian Summer Jobs (CSJ) program.
