Shepherd’s Care Foundation is a not-for-profit organization providing housing, care and supports to over 1600 seniors in a Christian, age in place environment. From home care services, long term care and supportive living to independent condos and apartments, we provide options that are right for each resident. But that’s not all we do.

We take the responsibility of caring for and advocating on behalf of our residents seriously; adapting daily to the changes in the environment of seniors care so families and residents do not need to.

Our Mission

Celebrate life in a caring Christian environment.

Our Vision

Be the leader in providing innovative aging-in-place services with excellence.

Our Principles

Christian Care – Christian Care is our ministry to the communities we serve. It is the foundation of who we are. We provide spiritual care and support to any of our residents, families and staff who welcome it.

Aging-in-Place – We strive to provide various programs and services, whether in a continuing care centre or an independent living community, to allow residents to stay within the Shepherd’s Care family. So, as needs change, residents can access care and support tailored to them, often within a single campus location.

Affordability – As a not-for-profit organization, Shepherd’s Care focuses on providing high quality accommodation and services for seniors of all income levels.

Our Values & Beliefs

  •  Every person has been created equal by God and has worth and value.
  •  Every person should be treated with dignity, equality, and respect.
  •  Every individual who may benefit is entitled to quality care.
  • The Christian elderly are best served when provided with loving Christian care.
  • Quality care is holistic, providing for spiritual, physical, emotional, and social needs in a loving Christian environment.
  • The private, voluntary, not-for-profit Christian organization is the ideal vehicle to practically demonstrate and deliver this total philosophy.
  •  Loyal, enthusiastic staff are crucial to holistic excellence.
  • We believe that the universe and human life came about through an act of special creation by an infinite personal God who has communicated to human beings through the Bible and in the person of Jesus Christ.
  • John 1:1 "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God."
  • Genesis 1:1 "In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth."

Person-Centred Care

People are at the core of our business, which is why we practice Person-Centred Caring (PCC). We take to heart the Biblical principle of loving our neighbours as we love ourselves.

Person-Centred Caring is rooted in three core components: autonomy, choice and flexibility. Our role as care providers is to ensure each resident has the autonomy to direct their days and the ability to choose activities they want and enjoy. We are flexible in responding to requests and finding solutions to any resident challenges or needs.

We follow the Resident Rights and Responsibilities, developed in partnership with our residents, and the Behaviour Standards, developed by our staff, as guiding documents to providing Person-Centred Care.

Commitment to Quality

At Shepherd’s Care, we continually strive to improve what we do in every area of the organization. This focus on achieving excellence and giving our best to God is what sets us apart from other organizations. Through our Living Excellence initiative we are able to create a team of individuals who are committed to this journey of quality.

Quality Initiatives

  • First organization in Canada to receive accreditation through CARF International (Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities) as an aging services network (2008 and re-accredited in 2011)
  • In 2011, CARF accreditation was also awarded to Shepherd’s Care Foundation for its assisted living programs
  • Surveying residents, staff and families to identify areas of improvement
  • An evidence based strategic planning cycle driving business planning and priorities
  • Participating in research studies that lead to improvements in seniors care
  • Internal committees devoted to quality, like our Best Practice Committee

Christian Care at Shepherd’s Care

Our Christian values and beliefs are the core of Shepherd’s Care Foundation. The Pastoral Care and Chaplaincy Department plays an integral role in extending Christian care and support to our residents and families. Our Pastors and Chaplains fill many roles at each Shepherd’s Care community to contribute to the vibrant, celebratory environment. From weekly rounds, praying and visiting with residents to running weekly programs, they are hands on with residents and families, building strong and trusting relationships.

Our Pastoral Care and Chaplaincy Department offers a variety of services to residents and families:

  • Pastoral care visits
  • Prayer support
  • Weekly services, Bible studies, hymn sings and communion services
  • Crisis and grief counselling and support
  • Quarterly memorial services
  • Funeral services or ceremonies
  • Volunteer opportunities

Our Pastors and Chaplains hold weekly church services at many of our locations, which are available for all residents. Services are also put on by other Christian denominations during the week. For more information, please visit the calendar of events for each community.

We strive to provide an all-inclusive environment and are sensitive to cultural beliefs and traditions. Our Pastors and Chaplains ensure each resident is invited to activities and programs. They work closely with various departments within Shepherd’s Care to guarantee residents are able to participate when they choose to. For activities and programs happening at each location, please visit the calendar of events for each community.

As is foundational with Shepherd’s Care, the Pastoral Care and Chaplaincy Department strives to do everything with excellence. Building relationships is fundamental to our Pastors’ and Chaplains’ role, and we do so throughout our local communities, including community churches.

The Foundation

In 1970, Edmonton had very few seniors’ homes and there was an obvious gap in services for the older population. A group of individuals were concerned about the wellbeing of their aging parents. They saw an opportunity and felt a call to make a difference not only for their parents, but also for Edmontonians. What started as an idea over coffee has grown into six locations in Edmonton and one in Barrhead, serving over 1600 seniors. The Foundation is grounded in Christian beliefs and values. Membership consists of 50 individuals appointed from four sponsoring churches:

Millwoods Assembly (Edmonton)

Southside Pentecostal Assembly (Edmonton)

Bethel Pentecostal Assembly (Barrhead)

Eaglemont Christian Church (Beaumont)

Fourteen of these members are elected at the Annual General Meeting of the Foundation to serve on the Board of Directors.
